Birch Milkcap - Lactarius tabidus
Convex, then depressed, often with a narrow central bump, usually finely wrinkled, margin sometimes lined, yellow-brown to orange-brown, to about 4 cm across. Gills are sub-decurrent, crowded, pale orange to yellowish, sometimes pinkish. The small size range and the association with birch are good indicators. If the milk is tested on a white handkerchief or paper tissue it dries bright yellow in a few seconds.
In deciduous woods, favouring Birch.
Late summer and autumn.
Widespread and common in Britain.
Common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
