Beech Woodwart - Hypoxylon fragiforme
Small warty brown growths which stand proud on the bark of the host. The fruiting bodies are up to 1cm across, hemispherical, bright salmon pink at first becoming brick red and later blackening, with a finely warted surface. Flesh hard, blackish.
It is important to know the that this fungus was found on Beech to distinguish it from similar species such as Birch Woodwart.
On the dead wood of Beech.
All year round.
Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
