Description

Wingspan 15 to 19 mm. A rather attractive species, with more distinct markings than some of its close relatives.

Habitat

It inhabits waste ground and dry open areas containing burdock.

When to see it

The moths fly from late June to August, from dusk into the night.

Life History

The larvae feed on the seedheads of burdock.

UK Status

It is locally but widely distributed throughout the British Isles. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as common.

VC55 Status

Fairly frequent but not common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = B (scarce resident or restricted distribution or regular migrant).
