Adelges laricis group - Adelges laricis

The larvae of Adelges laricis cause galls on Spruce. The galls are waxy, creamy and relatively small. The winged female which matures on spruce is greyish to blackish, with a body length of 1.9 to 2.0 mm.  For a full description of the life cycle see link below.

The Adelges laricis species group contains A. viridis, A. viridiana &  A. laricis, which cannot be readily distinguished. A. laricis is the commonest species.

Adult Gall

Adult: Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters.

Gall: When recording the gall please state the host species and provide images.

Found on Spruce and Larch.

The galls mature in June-July.

Adelges laricis host alternates between the primary host Spruce and the secondary host Larch.  (see further information link below).

True status in Britain is difficult to determine due to lack of records.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
