May be encountered around ponds, boggy or marshy areas, and slow-moving water bodies.
The larva is an active predator in muddy ponds, streams and dykes.
It seems to be fairly widespread in Britain but is probably under recorded.
Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
