Peppery Bolete - Chalciporus piperatus
A small bolete with a brown cap and rusty brown pores. The cap may be greasy or sticky when wet. It does not stain blue or change colour when cut or bruised. The stem is smooth and brown with a yellow base. The flesh of the stem is also bright yellow at the base (cut vertically through stem to see this). The taste is peppery.
Photograph a fresh specimen from top down and in side view, and underneath to show pores and full length of stipe. Check taste. Note habitat and substrate. Check for staining on cap and pores when bruised. We also recommend cutting vertically through cap and stem to show flesh colour and any staining.
Under Birch. It may have a close association with the Fly Agaric, Amanita muscaria - it is rarely found more than a few inches away (Kibby, 2017)
Autumn
Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
