Rufous Milkcap - Lactarius rufus

Russet-red milkcap, mainly asscoiated wih conifers. Dry cap with small umbo in central depression. The gills are pale.  The milk is white and unchanging in colour, with a rapidly burning acrid taste. 

There are several similar red-brown milkcaps.

Photograph from top down, in side view and from underneath to show gills and full length of stipe.  Note cap texture, smell, colour and taste of milk, and whether colour of milk changes on exposure to air (this may take some time).   You must note the tree species under which it was found.

Usually under conifers but may also be associated with birch or other deciduous species

August to November.

Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
