Description

This verge is on the western approach into Cottesmore on the B668.  It is backed by a mature hedge (mainly Hawthorn, Elder and Blackthorn). Three sizeable trees are located along the verge, two Pedunculate (English) Oaks and a Sycamore at the eastern end.

The verge is being managed to improve biodiversity by managing it as a wildflower meadow so it can support a much greater variety of wildlife species.

The verge has been surveyed by NatureSpot but different species come and go throughout the year. A much better understanding of the wildlife found on this site requires local residents to add records of what they have seen. Please take a photo if possible and include it with your record, using NatureSpot's Submit Records online form. Your record and any photos will then appear on this page!

No mowing will take place between April and August to allow the grasses and wildflowers to grow and bloom, providing food and cover to a wide variety of insects and other creatures. The meadow grassland that grows will then be cut in September.

57 plant species were recorded during the 2024 NatureSpot survey. Black Knapweed is well established, as is Autumn Hawkbit, Selfheal and grass, Common Bent.

The mown strip by the road has allowed a number of smaller plants to thrive, including Greater Plantain, Knotgrass and Pineappleweed, which would generally be out-competed amongst taller meadow vegetation.

A list of all the species found at the site, together with any images taken, appears below.

Note: the verge boundaries shown on the map are indicative, please refer to the signed/staked areas area on the ground for the exact location.

The records and images below may include those from adjacent sites if the grid reference submitted with these records overlaps the boundary of this Wild Place.
