Laccobius colon
A fairly plain, water scavenger beetle which may vary in colour from reddish-brown to dark brown. It can be similar to several other species. Care is needed with identification.
Detailed examination of the specimen is needed to identify the species (a photograph alone is not normally sufficient because key features are too small or hidden) and/or there are one or more similar species and confusion is common.
Ponds and pools with rich vegetation or weedy margins.
All year round, but mainly recorded March to October.
Widespread and fairly frequent in England and Wales.
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire & Rutland.
