Wild places in this area

Aylestone, formerly a separate village, is a suburb and ward within Leicester, southwest of the city centre and to the east of the River Soar. A significant area of the ward includes Aylestone Meadows (see Wild Places), a former flood plain of the River Soar and now a country park and the richest wildlife habitat in Leicester.

Lunar Hornet Moth

Lunar Hornet Moth

This may look like a wasp but don't be deceived - it's a moth! The spectacular Lunar Hornet Moth is rarely seen but this one was recorded in Aylestone in July 2021. Many harmless insects mimic bees and wasps to deter predators by pretending to be able to sting!
