Rutland Water, Manton Bridge

Selected Wild Place / Other Wild Places / Public Rights of Way / VC55 boundary

Getting There

Manton Bridge is located on the A6003 Oakham-Empingham road about 3 miles south of Oakham.

There is very limited parking near the bridge with a small disused track about 200m north of the bridge on the right (west) of the road travelling away from Oakham. Here space exists for 2-3 cars on the verge. However, the A6003  is a very fast route and considerable care should be taken turning on and off at this point.

The site also lies on the Rutland Water cycle track, see:

https://anglianwaterparks.co.uk/rutland-water-park/cycling

The R47 Centrebus service runs along the A6003 with stops to either side of Manton Bridge.

Description

Manton Bridge on the A6003 Oakham to Uppingham road offers views eastwards along Manton Bay at the point where the River Gwash enters the reservoir. Distant views of the osprey breeding platform (usually occupied April-September) are available although these are becoming somewhat restricted by vegetation. A scope is useful for viewing birds within Manton Bay.

Wildlife Highlights

At low water levels in autumn through to spring the banks of the River Gwash inflow can hold wader species, wildfowl are abundant including smew and rare grebes. Kingfishers are often seen near the bridge. Distant views of breeding Ospreys (April- September). Up to date information can be found at  http://www.lros.org.uk/News.htm
