Grey Field-speedwell - Veronica polita
It is quite similar to Green Field-speedwell but its leaves are grey-green rather than the purer green of Green Field-speedwell. It bears small, bright blue flowers (4 to 8 mm across) with oval and pointed sepals. The flowers are the typical shape of Speedwells, three larger petals with a smaller, paler petal below. This species usually only grows to about 20 cm. Capsule lobes diverge much less than 90 degrees, hooked hairs and glandular hairs.
Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters.
Usually found on well-drained soils, gardens, arable fields and waste ground and also from crevices in walls.
The main flowering season is from May to September but may be longer.
Annual.
Widespread in Britain but with a rather uneven distribution. Its distribution now seems stable in S. & E. England and Wales, but appears to be declining in N. England, Scotland and Ireland.
Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.

Sorosphaerula veronicae
Sorosphaerula veronicae causes galls on various species of Speedwell (Veronica sp.). The gall takes the form of a large (up to 4 mm thick) swelling of the stems (mainly lower down), also veins and petioles; inside is a reddish-brown mass of spores.
