Maize Weevil - Sitophilus zeamais
Reaching a length of 3 to 3.5 mm. It varies from dull red-brown to nearly black and is usually marked on the back with four light reddish or yellowish spots. The pronotum is densely pitted with irregularly shaped punctures, except for a smooth narrow dorsal strip.
Sitophilus zeamais is a pest of stored grain products etc.
It is a tropical species that may be accidentally introduced into the home at any time of the year on imported products.
Rarely recorded in Britain.
Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Ratby record of March 2018 is the first for this species in VC55.
