Rough Hawk's-beard - Crepis biennis

Description

A tall (50 to 100 cm) plant, the stem is woody at the base, the upper part branched and abundantly leaved. Contains milky latex. Flowers are golden yellow, dandelion-like up to 3 cm across. Bracts in two rows, outer short and spreading, often different lengths, inner much longer, of even length.

Life History

Biennial.

UK Status

Occasional and local - native on chalk soils in S.E. England, but elsewhere introduced, often with grass seed, and persisting locally.

VC55 Status

Scarce in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the Flora of Leicestershire (Primavesi and Evans 1988) it was found in 2 of the 617 tetrads, and in the Flora of Rutland (Messenger 1971) in 7 tetrads

It is listed on the current VC55 Rare Plant Register (Hall and Woodward 2022) as Locally Scarce (i.e. present in 4-10 sites)
