Tachyporus chrysomelinus sensu stricto

Description

3.3-4mm. This small orange and black rove beetle is shaped like a teardrop. It is has a black head and red-orange pronotum. The elytra are predominently red but with some darkening at the base around the scutellum. The four bristles protruding from the sides of the elytra are long (longer than the width of the mid tibia). Three bristles on the hind margin of the eytra.

Similar Species

Other Tachyporus species. T. dispar is very similar but has four bristles along the hind margin of each elyton.

  • elytra red, often with darkening at the base (around the scutellum and margin)
  • four long lateral bristles on each elytron that are longer than the width of the mid tibia

Habitat

In plant litter, moss, leaves etc, and on the soil surface.

When to see it

All year round peaking between late February and May.

Life History

Predatory on small insects on the soil or on plants, especially aphids.

Common and widespread in Britain.
