See what was seen in Leicestershire and Rutland gardens during the RSPB's 2010 Garden Birdwatch.

The RSPB's annual Garden Birdwatch was supported by 530,000 people and recorded 73 species across 280,000 gardens. The results for Leicestershire and Rutland largely reflected the national picture, with the House Sparrow remaining the most numerous bird overall, despite population declines in many areas.

The Blackbird was the bird seen in most gardens, with nearly 98% of Leicestershire gardens having recorded this species. The survey was carried out in January and the unusually cold weather was responsible for some changes from previous years. The smallest birds suffered the most, with Long-tailed Tit, Coal Tit and Goldcrest numbers dropping dramatically since 2009. The cold weather also brought in more 'countryside' birds such as fieldfares, bullfinches and yellowhammers as food in the fields became harder to find.
