Selected parish/ward / Wild Places / Footpaths / Parish/ward boundaries

To find out more about local Wild Places (red boundaries on the map), visit the Wild Places page. Contact NatureSpot if you have an idea for any additional Wild Places.

There are several excellent wildlife areas in the parish: Thornton Reservoir, Bagworth Heath Woods and Thornton Meadows are some of these (see the Wild Places pages).

Thornton Reservoir has a path around a perimeter of the reservoir plus a number of interesting habitats adjacent. Of particular note are Thornton Meadows (adjacent to the play area) which has a superb meadow and is also an excellent site for waxcaps in Autumn.

Bagworth Heath Woods is a country park and is a reclaimed coal mining site. The fishing lakes provide some wetland habitat and the hundreds of planted trees are maturing but the the most interesting habitat is the heath grassland.

Thornton Meadows has been surveyed and is being proposed as a Local Wildlife Site.
