Getting There

The quarry is located on the northwest edge of Stamford, close to the A1 and A606. Little Casterton Road and the Old Great North Road (the B1081) border some parts of the perimeter, and offer access via cut-throughs in the hedgerow.

Some roadside parking is available in Stamford, but please be mindful of residents and signage.

Description

Surveyed in 2009 and designated a candidate Local Wildlife Site, the former quarry at Little Casterton occupies 35.3 hectares. The site is a mosaic of habitats, with ponds, scrubland, mesotrophic grassland, and woodland, including a plantation broad-leaved wood (100-150 years old) of approximately 4.8 hectares in size.

Wildlife Highlights

Recorded species include: Agrimony, Common Sedge, Glaucous Sedge, Knapweed, Hard Rush, Ox-eye Daisy, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Cowslip, Meadow Buttercup, Bulbous Buttercup, and Red Clover.
