The season may be over for most fungi but one species comes into its own at this time of year - Velvet Shank, Flammulina velutipes - which can be commonly found growing on dead wood. More...

It typically grows in clusters, with orange caps to 10cm across. Smooth when dry, the caps become very slimy when wet. This species is unaffected by frosts which destroy most other fungi and it can even be seen growing in snow.
