Balkan Threeband Slug - Ambigolimax nyctelius

May reach 40 to 60 mm long extended. Grey to pink-brown, fairly translucent skin; lyre-shaped banding on mantle; pair of longitudinal dark lines (sometimes breaking up into spots) on dorsum and mantle on either side of a mid-line (sometimes apparent); small keel; pale edge of pneumostome; clear mucus; pale sole.

The Greenhouse Slug Ambigolimax valentianus is usually paler with a more watery appearance and not as well marked and usually has just two bands on the mantle. Confidently separating these two species requires dissection. 

Various habitats including deciduous woodland and gardens; under fallen logs, stones and in compost heaps – usually in shady places.

All year round.

Mainly recorded in the south of England.

Rare or under recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
